Honoring a Legacy: Artist Joshua Leonard Captures the Spirit of John Lewis

February 13, 2025

In this captivating video character artist Joshua Leonard, founder of Leonard Studios, takes us on a journey through his creative process as he crafts a powerful portrait of late Congressman John Lewis. With Black History Month in mind, Leonard focuses on raw emotion and historical significance, using his artistic talents to pay homage to the civil rights icon.

The Process

Leonard starts by emphasizing the importance of rough sketches, the foundation for his vision. He explains his usual approach: “I typically begin with rough sketches, exploring different looks and colors depending on the piece.” However, for this particular portrait, he opts for a more textured and gritty style, reflecting the hardships Lewis endured in his fight for equality.

“Especially with Congressman John Lewis and everything he’s been through,” Leonard explains, “I wanted to create a piece with a raw and powerful energy, just like him. So, I used textures and cross-hatching to evoke the struggles he faced, like the beatings on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.”

The video showcases Leonard’s meticulous attention to detail as he brings Lewis’s likeness to life. He shares his artistic choices, such as emphasizing certain features and adding subtle shadows and highlights for depth.

“I wanted to portray him with strength and dignity,” Leonard says. “He was a fighter who confronted injustice, and this portrait is a tribute to his legacy.”

Beyond the Technique: A Portrait Steeped in Meaning

While the technical aspects are fascinating, what truly elevates the piece is the profound meaning Leonard infuses into it. He incorporates symbolic elements like the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a poignant reminder of Lewis’s courageous leadership during the Selma to Montgomery marches. The powerful phrase “good trouble” is also included, a testament to Lewis’s philosophy of peaceful yet impactful activism.

“John Lewis believed that meaningful change often requires disruption and a willingness to challenge the status quo,” Leonard explains. “Good trouble embodies that spirit.”

Through his artwork, Leonard pays tribute to Lewis’s extraordinary life and legacy and seeks to educate and inspire viewers. He hopes to spark conversations about civil rights, social justice, and the importance of standing up for what is right.

“I hope you enjoy this piece,” Leonard concludes. “This is a tribute to the great John Lewis, a true civil rights leader. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to meet him and create this artwork for Black History Month.”
